🎭 How to Play Your Role
1
Welcome Lan: “Hi! Need a SIM today?”
2
Ask about where she’ll live & data needs. Listen carefully.
3
Present Optus Flex Plus first. Emphasise the bigger data for only $20.
4
If she worries about country coverage, compare Telstra’s 8 GB for $25.
5
Negotiate. If she wants cheaper, offer it for \$30 → lowest \$28.
6
Close: activate SIM, give receipt, wish her luck at the meat plant.
💳 Explain Plan Types to the Student
The student may not know the difference between Prepaid and Upfront (Postpaid).
Use the cards below to explain. Remember — Lan can only get Prepaid
because she just arrived and has no Australian ID or bank account.
✅
Prepaid
Sell This to Lan
💵 Pay first, use later
📅 28 or 30 day cycle
🪪 No ID or credit check needed
📝 No contract — flexible
🛒 Available at your shop right now
🔄 Student just recharges when it expires
❌
Upfront (Postpaid)
Not Available for Lan
💳 Use first, get a bill each month
📋 Locked 12–24 month contract
🪪 Requires 100 points of Australian ID
🏦 Requires Australian bank account
📱 May include a phone (added to bill)
⚠️ Early cancellation fee applies
🎭 How to Explain This During the Role-play:
"Since you just arrived, prepaid is the way to go — no ID needed."
"Upfront plans need Australian ID and a bank account. You can switch to one later when you're settled."
"With prepaid you just pay now and you're good for 28 days. Easy!"
"When your 28 days finish, you can recharge online or come back to the shop."
🤫
If the student asks about Upfront plans:
Explain politely that they need 100 points of ID
(passport = 70 points, so they still need a driver's licence or bank statement).
Steer them back to prepaid. This is realistic — most new arrivals
cannot pass a postpaid credit check.
🗺️ Show Real Coverage Maps
Use these during the role-play to prove your point!
Open a map and type "Tamworth NSW" to show the student
how coverage differs between networks.

💬 Phrases You Can Use
“Our Vodafone pack has free calls to Vietnam – perfect for you.”
“Plenty of data for Messenger—no need to pay for voice minutes.”
“Telstra gets the best signal in country areas, but calls home cost extra.”
“If you grab two SIMs today I can drop each one to twenty-eight dollars.”
“Do you need help setting it up now or later on the bus?”
"Tamworth is regional — not all networks work well out there."
"Telstra has the best signal in the country, but costs a bit more."
"This cheaper plan uses Optus — it might be slow outside town."
"Coverage means where your phone gets signal. No coverage = no internet."
💡
Teaching Tip: Keep the talk natural. If Lan struggles, slow down and
rephrase. Focus on communicative success, not perfect grammar.
