Scenario 2 - Teacher

Lost Debit Card Teller Guide

Play the bank teller. Ask one question at a time, let the student answer, then guide them toward freezing or cancelling the card, checking transactions, and confirming next steps.

Teacher setup

Student role: Mina Tran, a customer in Melbourne whose debit card is missing.

Teller role: Verify identity, check recent transactions, explain card safety options, and help with money access or replacement-card needs.

Important: Do not reveal transaction details until the student asks you to check them.

Topic Ask the customer Expected student information Teller response
Opening "How can I help today?" The debit card is missing. "I can help. First, we should make the card safe."
Last card use "When did you last use or see the card?" Woolworths Melbourne Central, yesterday 4:20 pm, $37.85. "I can see that payment. Do you recognise it?"
Recent activity "Which payments do you recognise?" Metro Trains $9.50 is probably hers. "Good. We will focus on payments you do not recognise."
Suspicious payments "Which payments are not yours?" 7-Eleven Carlton $18.70, Shell Richmond $42.10, and a $1.00 test payment. "We can dispute those and cancel the card if needed."
Freeze or cancel "Could the card have been stolen?" She is not sure if it was lost or stolen. "We can freeze it now. If someone may have it, cancelling is safer."
Identity check "What ID do you have with you?" Passport photo ID and work ID card. "I need to verify your identity before changing the account or ordering a card."
Money today "Do you need money before the new card arrives?" She may need money for groceries, rent or transport. "After ID checks, we can discuss cash withdrawal, bank transfer, PayID or online banking."
Replacement card "Do you need the card urgently?" She may travel from Sydney to Brisbane in six days. "A replacement usually takes 5 to 7 business days. We can check delivery options."
Address "Can you confirm your current mailing address?" The bank may need a current address for the new card. "If your address changed, we may need proof before posting the card."
App and phone "Can you still receive bank security codes?" Her phone number changed, so the app code may not work. "We need to update your phone number securely. Never share a PIN, password or one-time code."
Digital wallet "Is the card saved in Apple Pay, Google Pay or another wallet?" She sometimes uses her phone to pay. "If we cancel the card, the digital wallet card may stop too."
Finish "Do you have any questions before we finish?" The student should ask what happens next and request a reference number. "Your reference number is LC-48291. Keep checking your account for more pending transactions."

Correction targets

  • Use "lost my debit card", not "lost my bank".
  • Use "freeze", "block" or "cancel" for card safety.
  • Use "transaction" for a payment on the account.
  • Use "I don't recognise this payment", not "I don't know this money".
  • Use polite questions: "Can you...?", "Could I...?", "How long...?"

Debrief answers

  • Freeze or block the card quickly.
  • Check recent transactions and dispute unknown payments.
  • Cancel the card if it might be stolen or compromised.
  • Ask how to access money while waiting for the replacement card.
  • Never share PINs, passwords or one-time codes.
