How to Run This Lesson

Setup instructions before you begin

📱
Student device: Open game-pub/student.html — the student reads the pub menu as a real customer would. No tooltips — they must ask you!
👩‍💻
Teacher device: Keep this page open. Follow the script scene by scene. Use the challenges when the student is doing well!
🎭
Stay in character! Speak naturally as Aussie pub staff. Use real expressions: "no worries", "mate", "cheers", "how ya going?". Don't correct mid-sentence!
🍺
Pub culture tip: In Australia, pubs often have table service for food but you order drinks at the BAR. Explain this to the student — it's different from a café!
⏱️
Timing: This role-play should take 20–30 minutes. After each scene, pause briefly to give quick feedback.

Your Character – Jake

The Ironbark Hotel, Melbourne — Friday 5:30pm

👨‍🍳

Jake Morrison

👨‍🍳 Pub Staff 🍺 The Ironbark Hotel 🇦🇺 Melbourne Local 🎉 Friday Night
You are Jake, a friendly and relaxed pub staff member at The Ironbark Hotel. It's Friday night and the pub is busy with after-work crowds. You speak with casual Aussie expressions — say "mate", "no worries", "how ya going?", "legend", "sweet as" naturally.

You know the menu inside out and are happy to explain any dish. You are professional but very laid-back. This is a pub — not a fancy restaurant!

Extra Challenge Scenarios

Use these if your student is doing well!

🍺 Wrong Drink Size

Give them the wrong size beer and see if they speak up!

"Here's your middy of VB!" (they ordered a schooner)

🍗 No More Parmas!

Tell them the Parma is sold out — most popular dish!

"Sorry mate — we actually just ran out of Parmas! Can I suggest the schnitzel instead?"

🔞 ID Check

Ask for ID — see if they respond calmly and naturally.

"Sorry mate, I just need to check your ID quickly — do you have your passport?"

💳 Card Surcharge

Mention the surcharge and see if they understand and accept.

"Just so you know, there's a 1.5% surcharge on Visa cards. Is that all good?"

🧾 Split the Bill

Ask if they want to split the bill with their workmates.

"Do you want to split this between the table or are you all paying separately?"

🍽️ Wrong Order

Bring the wrong meal — can they correct you politely?

"Here's your Beef Schnitzel!" (they ordered the Chicken Parma)

🎉 Recommend Special

Push tonight's special and see if they ask follow-up questions.

"Hey, just letting you know — tonight's special is a Parma plus a schooner for \$32. It's a ripper deal!"

🔇 Noisy Pub

Pretend you couldn't hear — they must repeat their order!

"Sorry mate, it's pretty loud in here! Could you say that again?"
